REGIONAL PARTNERSHIP FOR GLOBAL CHALLENGES – VIA SECOND-GENERATION AVIATION BIOFUEL

Mobility is a prerequisite for growth, and air travel keeps the country vital. But the industry faces a great challenge: to be fossil-free by 2030. In Norrbotten there are unique conditions for driving development towards an energy transition and creating the next generation of aviation biofuel based on forest raw materials.

The regional business community, the municipalities of Luleå and Piteå and Luleå University of Technology have therefore joined forces in the TreePower initiative. Together, we are embarking on a journey towards fossil-free

aviation fuel based on residual forest biomass. The ambition is to contribute to a large-scale technological shift, increased circularity, a more rapid transition to fossil-free air travel and reduced reliance on fossil fuels. The project in brief

Over a three-year period the project will develop the necessary conditions for starting large-scale commercial domestic production of aviation biofuel in Norrbotten. The project is a joint initiative of several actors who are together working to achieve the long-term objectives: fossil-free domestic air travel by 2030 and increased growth and employment in Norrbotten.

Purpose: Create conditions for large-scale production of aviation biofuel in Norrbotten

Objective: A business case for production of aviation biofuel and a functioning pilot plant.

Long-term objectives: Contribute to realization of the vision of fossil-free domestic air travel by 2030, and increased growth and employment in Norrbotten

Timeframe:January 2020–December 2023.

Project group: Luleå Business Region is the project owner and Luleå University of Technology and Piteå Science Park are collaborating partners. A large number of strategic partners are contributing to the project.

Our work process

To be able to start large-scale commercial domestic production of aviation biofuel the right conditions must be in place. TreePower will therefore base its work on five building blocks which are the foundation for the entire project: raw materials, technology, energy, localisation and market. At the close of the project all of the building blocks will be in place for final delivery of a business case for large-scale commercial domestic production of aviation biofuel.
